Overview
Biomedical Engineering
department, Faculty of Engineering & Applied Sciences , Riphah
International University (RIU) is presently the only department in the
North area which is running a PEC accredited BS Biomedical Engineering
program. The department is planning to launch its MS Program. The
emphasis of this program will not only be on the prospective students
with engineering specialization but also to broaden the range of intake
by accepting applicants with non-engineering qualification such as MSc
Mathematics, Physics, Computer Sciences and Electronics.
The curriculum is designed in such a
way that it will equip the students with the modern requirements of the
market that includes both academia and industry. The students will also
be directed to a specific theme by considering the strengths and
weaknesses of each individual student. In this regard, a research
project will be assigned to them during the second semester of the
program. This will also better utilize and evaluate the interest and
expertise of the students, which they can later adopt as their field of
specialization.
The duration, courses and credit hours are aligned with the rules and regulations laid down by the HEC.
Post graduate study in Biomedical Engineering
Not a single biomedical device has ever been developed without an extensive multidisciplinary collaboration but, nevertheless, a wide gap exists between different themes applied to biomedical engineering such as physics, mathematics, nanotechnology, biomechanics and biomaterials.
It is extremely important in a country like Pakistan that has an enormous number of graduates having a degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer sciences and Electronics to be given an opportunity of applying their extensive knowledge in the relevant fields to solve problems encountered in the vast field of health care technology. This would not only help such students to increase the range of their expertise and job prospects but also the biomedical engineering field itself would benefit from such a rich integration.
It is the lack of researchers and research groups, which has not yet ignited the flame of genuine research in the area of biomedical engineering in Pakistan. This post graduate program would help increase the number of quality graduates, who can really contribute to establish a national biomedical engineering research platform and build strength to compel government for making a law that every hospital in Pakistan must have a biomedical engineering department.
Description of the Program
Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), Faculty of Engineering & Applied Sciences (FEAS), proposes to offer Master of Science in the following relevant biomedical specialization:
• MS in Biomedical Engineering (degree awarded to candidates with engineering qualification )
• MS in Biomedical Instrumentation and signal processing (degree awarded to candidates with non-engineering qualification)
• MS in Biomechanics (degree awarded to candidates with non-engineering qualification)
The Biomedical Engineering specialization will provide students with a course of study that would prepare them for further study towards a doctoral program as well as equip them to take up challenges in the demanding field of Biomedical Engineering. The Biomedical Instrumentation and Biomechanics options would allow students to pursue a course of study which interacts with other science areas such as physics, applied physics and electronics. This MS program will also become a bridge to link the knowledge of applied sciences with the specialized area of biomedical engineering for those prospective students who have MSc degrees in physics, mathematics, computer sciences and electronics.
The goal of the MS program will be to increase the number of graduates in careers of Biomedical Engineering and sciences, who are to date underrepresented in these fields and to increase Academia-industry linkage. The program is intended to help prepare students for professional opportunities in industry and academia that require training at the graduate level and also help students prepare to pursue a PhD degree.
• The goal of biomedical engineering domain is to produce students with broad knowledge and research experiences in engineering such as biomedical instrumentation, neural network, biomedical modeling and simulation, biomedical signals processing.
• The goal of biomedical Instrumentation and biomechanics stream is to allow graduates from non-engineering fields to gain knowledge in biomedical engineering field and then to integrate their in-depth knowledge of physics and other relevant fields to address and provide solutions in the area of healthcare technology.
The following objectives have been adopted:
a) To provide a supportive learning environment to all potentially successful students.
b) To prepare department to establish a PhD program in Biomedical engineering
c) To establish a more research conducive environment in BME
e) To strengthen the existing BE Engineering program
